graceful and ruthless; the one who picks the flower. ugghhh…it’s just soeasy for touga to play a prince. he’s so manipulative it makes my skin crawl. these last episodes of the student council saga highlight how painfully naive utena is and dare i say desperate too. longing for her prince since childhood it’s just too simple to be played by someone like touga. but i say this without judgement because who among us hasn’t searched for love so desperately that a man, or woman, who has all the right words to say took advantage of those fairy tale ideals and used them for their own ends. these games are just played more masterfully by someone like touga. but something about touga is still a mystery to me and thats why does he duel? he has no obvious reason like the other members of the student council. what does revolution bring for him?
and then the anthy/utena feels begin. utena asks anthy if she would like to make friends with wakaba and these are some of the moments i love most in the series because when anthy answers, “i wish i could become her friend, too.” i believe anthy is telling the truth not just saying what her engaged wants to hear and it’s so beautiful because only utena can bring that truth from her. and what makes it’s so heartbreaking when utena loses the duel with touga.
Touga: Now that you have lost the Duel, the connection between you two is severed. Touga: Forget all about her, and about this Duel. Utena: It’s a lie! Utena: It’s a lie, right, Himemiya? Tell me the truth! Utena: Didn’t you tell me that you hated being the Rose Bride…that you wanted to make friends?! Touga: Anthy, bid your farewell. Anthy: Take it easy, Tenjou-san. Utena: …it’s a lie… Utena: It’s a lie… Utena: It’s a lie! Utena: IT’S A LIE!!
